MFA Graduate Research Project | Jen Pepper, Design Like a Lady: An activity book for budding designers

Jen joined the MFA program to pursue her goal of teaching up-and-coming designers at the collegiate level. Her design career has helped her be adaptable, and she has created award-winning work in a variety of mediums, including —advertising, branding, packaging, copywriting, illustration, and photography. She currently works at her studio, The Chatty Press, where she designs wedding invitations for creative couples. When she’s not working, you can find her road-tripping, reading, or learning how to skateboard.

Women designers have been blazing trails since the 1700s, but most graphic design history books have failed to showcase their stories. Design Like A Lady shares the lives and work of ten remarkable women of our design past and present to inspire the budding designers and artists of our future.

Inside you’ll find the stories and design portfolios of amazing ladies working in every facet of design, including illustration, advertising, interactive, packaging, and even furniture design. Each designer is paired with a real-world design project that you can complete right inside the book — no fancy computer software required. The book focuses on…

What is Design: An approachable introduction to the types of graphic design, the principles of design, and how design fits into our lives.

Ten Remarkable Women: Explore ten women designers’ lives, careers, and creative work. Discover the inspiration behind their work and become inspired to create our own designs.

Practical Projects: Create packaging for an Ice Cream Shop, design a poster for your favorite band, design icons for a digital game, and even create a postage stamp. Using basic art supplies, you’ll start your own design studio alongside these inspiring women.

Jen is currently seeking publication for her book that will inspire young artists pick up a pencil and explore the world of graphic design.
