MFA Graduate Research Project | Emily Rudolph, The Community Garden

Emily Rudolph is a graphic designer and web developer who is always interested in learning new things, inside and outside of her field. She specializes in taking a project from concept to launch and having her touch on every part of the journey. When not designing or coding, she can be found taking up yet another new hobby and reading through Wikipedia pages for fun.

The Community Garden is a virtual data visualization of community and its effects on individuals. Users can explore questions about their community, share their thoughts, and help other people’s plants grow. The color and type of plant is controlled by the question answered and the theme of the answer. The garden will continually evolve over time as different experiences are added and users help each other’s answers grow and eventually be harvested!

More Work by Emily

Adva:

This is where the idea of Adva came from. Adva is a company for Jewish people transitioning to a kosher kitchen. They sell dishes with a lifetime guarantee – if a dish becomes contaminated, they will send you a new one.

The Earthworm Project:

For this project, I wanted to do something relating to the environment and how we can have a lasting impact on our communities and our planet as a whole, while also keeping it fun and light and enticing to participate in. I found my inspiration in an unlikely creature: worms. This project is colorful and bright, enticing people to join in cleaning up their communities.

Weave:

I created a system to help people who struggle with networking. It includes a conversation-prompt app, a calming space at events, a social platform for connection, and a dual-purpose card deck—one with conversation tips, the other with affirmations—to ease nerves and support introverts at social gatherings.
